Johansson was born to a renowned architect, as well as a producer, was raised in New York City. Hunter, her twin sister, was born in New York City. In her early years she started acting. At seven, she had already auditioned for several commercials. To enhance her skills, she attended an acting class at Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute in Manhattan and then she attended the Professional Children's School. Her debut came as an actress on film in North (1994) aged nine. When she was eight years old, she starred alongside Ethan Hawke on Off-Broadway in Sophistry. Johansson played the lead role as a character in Just Cause (1995), after which she made her debut by starring in Manny & Lo - a story of two sisters and orphans that get away. Next, she received the praise of critics for playing an teen girl who experienced an accident which left her with a blemish in The Horse Whisperer (1998). Her popularity grew with the film Ghost World (2002) as the cynical outcast Rebecca. Similar to many actors starting out, she chose to refine her craft in the world of theatre. When she performed her stage debut with Wildflower she would also work on different projects across USA.
